The touring camp indicated Atkinson reported "discomfort" and would spend time away from the action for further assessment "over the next few hours".
The final Test in this Ashes battle in Sydney gets underway on Sunday, 4 January.
The English side has previously lost strike bowlers one seamer to a knee injury and another paceman with an abdominal strain during this series.
Matthew Fisher was called up as cover for Wood.
