The distinctive yellow-fronted apartment block in the background helped us verify the video.

Our team is checking video footage and photographs shared this morning that depict the aftermath of a alleged car bomb explosion that authorities in Russia state fatally injured a high-ranking military officer in Moscow.

Russian authorities stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that exploded and that he succumbed to his wounds. A probe is currently ongoing.

The initial step to check the location of where the images originated relied on posts indicating the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.

Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to match the unique yellow hue of a nearby apartment building seen in the footage.

Identifying other structures, streetlights and the street layout confirmed where the pictures were captured.

We also checked that the videos were new and that the images had not undergone manipulated.
