The Reform UK leader Claims Educators of ‘Poisoning Our Kids’ on Race Issues
Nigel Farage has asserted that teachers would go on strike shortly after a success at the polls for his party, charging that they are “poisoning our kids” by telling students that African-Caribbean youth are oppressed and white children oppressors.
At a gathering for a Michigan-based religious institution, Farage outlined his viewpoint on British schools, stating that the “Marxist left” had “taken over schooling”.
“I expect a teachers’ strike soon after securing a victory,” Farage commented during a Q&A session.
“They are corrupting young minds. They instruct children to feel guilt about their nation. They are telling little Johnny, who’s eight, who is black that he is a victim and little Oliver, who is white, who is eight that he is an oppressor. They create division, not uniting us. They promote this harmful mindset.”
Reacting to these assertions, Daniel Kebede dismissed the idea that the education system was controlled by Marxists as “absurd”. Kebede noted that industrial action must relate to educators’ working conditions, and doubted whether the party would target these immediately upon entering government.
“Farage has built his public life on dog-whistle politics and currently, like Trump, he is targeting educators and their organizations for a fight,” the union leader said.
“This is highly reckless. I don’t – and nor does my union – advocate such divisive theories as he’s suggesting … Should he become prime minister he would sell out our public services, particularly schooling … and he would be a disaster for students and learning.”
Reform, which is leading the polls by a significant margin, has provided limited specifics on its educational plans and does not appear to have appointed an education spokesperson.
Nonetheless, his comments suggested the party would overhaul the system and the curriculum. Farage declared: “We face an enormous task with education – absolutely herculean. And, we can’t do it in six months or a year; it will take us years, years to turn this around.”
He stated that younger generations are receptive to critical thinking, but older youth were “completely lost”.
Honoring Charlie Kirk, Farage said: “All I want education to do to teach critical thinking – to instruct people that multiple perspectives exist and you make up your own mind as opposed to what’s happening now where one is virtuous and one is evil. It’s a massive job in the UK and US.”
Reform has previously clashed with the UK’s largest teaching union, after Kebede called the party “extremist and prejudiced” and described the leader as “a poundshop Donald Trump”.
Farage has accused Kebede of being “a self-declared Marxist” … an individual intent that young minds be corrupted through education, their minds should be poisoned about everything to do with this country” and has argued that the union is trying to indoctrinate teenagers against Reform.
Roughly a million individuals work in schools in the UK, with educators comprising half and the remainder being assistants and administrative personnel. The leading teachers’ organization has hundreds of thousands of members.
Countrywide walkouts over educators’ salaries and work environment in 2023 led to significant interruptions in schools and millions of days of lost learning for students.
At the US event, Farage also pledged to help spread the online educational material of the Christian college in the UK. He said organizations like it were “part of the fightback”, adding that: “I mean this. I will help attract vast numbers of young people to these educational programs. I pledge this now and I’ll do that.”
The institution, a religious educational establishment, provides complimentary classes. According to its online description: “A scientific, literary, theological, political, and moral education is necessary for personal happiness and to perpetuate the blessings of freedom. It offers these excellent programs for free to all who wish to learn.”
