He remarked, "We can already see that Moscow is rushing to resume dialogue immediately after it hears about Tomahawks." These remarks addressed earlier musings about supplying long-range missiles to Ukraine.

Diplomatic Moves and Global Responses

A former US state department official, Dan Fried, commented, "Putin is attempting to derail the momentum toward increased sanctions on Russia." He added, "We'll see tomorrow, but the likelihood of achieving a ceasefire by pressuring Russia to get serious appear to have decreased."

The development followed Trump had in recent days been strengthening his language toward Moscow until the recent call with Putin, which the Kremlin described as "highly open and trustful."

EU Energy Sanctions and Economic Impact

EU authorities have set a mandate for fuel suppliers into the European Union to demonstrate their products are not made from Russian crude, as stated in a official guideline published on recently. This measure is included in the European Union's upcoming prohibition on purchases of refined products processed from Russian crude, which forms part of its latest sanctions package against Russia over its war in the region.

"This represents a favorable turn for the oil market as it would eliminate a major customer of Russian oil," said a market analyst, adding that crude values were stable on Thursday.

Military Situation and Infrastructure Strikes

A large-scale Russian drone and missile attack targeted energy infrastructure in Ukraine's eastern regions on Thursday, resulting in outages in multiple regions. Ukrainian officials stated that Russia launched hundreds of unmanned vehicles and many of missiles, along with aerial munitions.

"During this fall, the Russian forces use every single day to strike at our energy infrastructure," said Volodymyr Zelenskyy, adding that attacks impacted the areas of northern Ukraine, eastern Ukraine, central Ukraine, Sumy and Vinnytsia.

Meanwhile, the European Union's top diplomat, the bloc's representative, stated that the EU had no choice but to strengthen anti-drone defences against Russian threats. Kallas announced a "plan" to prepare for potential security challenges by the end of the decade, including a new anti-drone system to be fully operational by the end of 2027.

The proposed system, called the "EU defensive program," is projected to begin working initially by the 2026 timeline and be fully functioning by the following year. EU authorities hopes to obtain the support of EU leaders at a summit in the coming days.
