UN:Me: An Psychological Thriller That Blends Silent Hill and Among Us Gameplay
The recent Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled several intriguing future games, but one especially has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure appears to blend the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction core of Among Us.
"It's a unique game where a girl containing multiple human souls within her must escape from a maze of the psyche," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Fractured Consciousness
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of high school age. Inside her exist four separate personas, all possessing their own fears and motivations. These souls can take over at will, unleashing their innermost phobias upon her without warning.
Based on revealed gameplay, much of the action unfolds within a eerie medical facility, though additional clips show the main character navigating a abandoned church.
An Environment of Individual Horror
"What makes you fearful of? What makes you uncomfortable?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. People in power. Elements that appear minor to other people can activate something primal within us. This game explores that concept — fears that are specific to each person."
The core mechanic involves managing whichever soul emerges at any given time. However, these souls will change against your will as you play. While exploring, each soul's fears become amplified and attack the protagonist in succession. When the soul shifts, so does the specific fear the player encounters.
Eerie Visuals and a Deadly Decision
Initially, UN:Me shares striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is populated by nurses who all share the same face, with disturbingly broad grins. Patients in the lobby have enormous blooms growing from their heads should be. Floral motifs are an ever-present element, contrasting natural beauty with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique twist. Players must determine which of the four entities haunting the protagonist is the "real" one. "Each of the souls claims that the body belongs to them," explains a creator. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is authentic."
Once players have deduced a soul is fake, they are forced to destroy it. However, since each soul can lie or hide the truth, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.
"Maybe you've already destroyed the true [soul] with your own hands," a voice states. "The final entity remaining might be a fake. In any case, your decisions are final."
UN:Me does not yet have a confirmed release date, but it is available to follow on platforms.
