What We Know Regarding the Fatalities of the Bondi Shooting

At least 16 people were killed and over 40 were hurt when attackers opened fire at a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, an attack local police have labeled a terrorist attack.

In the latest update, authorities have stated the death toll stands at 16, which includes one of the suspected attackers. Furthermore, 42 injured people were admitted to hospital.

The victims have not yet been publicly named, but investigators think their ages are between 10 and 87 years of age.

Listed are the victims who have been identified to date.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Described as a father of five children, he was the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and friends described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member asked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.

She recounted the moments before the attack, explaining they had been standing together when the gunfire began. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.

The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced immense hardship in their youth. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

In a statement, a senior official expressed that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the statement continued.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was also killed during the attack, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospital, a significant number remain under care, with five in a critical state. Those hurt include two officers who responded to the attack.

A wounded man is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Described as a hero, he received bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the actions of those who came to assist. He said he believed it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the attack. He told reporters he heard “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
